Home for the Holidays: Creating the Perfect Christmas Tree
The holidays are upon us and you either love them with the passion of Buddy the Elf or you’re feeling a bit Scroogy about all the extra things this time of year adds to your to-do list. Don’t let decorating your Christmas tree be one of the things that causes you to throw up your hands in frustration and drown your sorrows in spiked eggnog…well drink the eggnog if that helps, but do it while decorating your tree! Just follow these quick and easy steps and you’ll have a beautiful holiday tree in no time so you can get back to that eggnog and catching up on the latest cheesy Hallmark movie. Come on, don’t pretend you’re not secretly watching them too.
1. THE TREE
Make sure to get a good tree. These days you can’t beat the flocked Christmas trees (like this one from Walmart). Having a tree that is pre-lit is also ideal as it will save you time, hassle and space. I recommend all white lights on the tree to keep the look cohesive.
2. FILLER & RIBBONS
Before you put anything else on the tree, use some pieces to fill in all the bare spots and gaps. Then, wrap a ribbon or two around it, weaving it in and out of the tree. You’ll instantly see the difference this makes even with nothing else there. Ribbon really helps to add another special element and will give the tree an extra elegant feel.
3. ORNAMENTS
More is more when it comes to decorating the tree, you can NEVER have too many ornaments. Start by picking a colour scheme that goes with your design aesthetic or one that coordinates with your other holiday decorations. Some of the most popular combinations are:
Red and white
Red and gold
Gold and silver
Gold and white
Now that you’ve chosen your colours, look for a variety of ornaments in those colours. But don’t just buy all red balls or all gold stars. Try to mix and match the shapes and also get varying sizes of ornaments, it will help add texture and depth to the look of the tree. And don’t be afraid to place larger ornaments on the top of the tree as well.
4. THE TOP AND BOTTOM
Don’t be so focused on decorating the tree that you forget the most important parts to pull the look together! Every beautiful Christmas tree needs a topper and a skirt. Stars and angels seem to dominate the Christmas tree topper options available but there are so many different variations to choose from. Make sure to find one that matches your colour scheme, that is sturdy and of good quality since it’s the first thing most people look at. But that being said, don’t leave your Christmas tree embarrassed and exposed! Find a beautiful skirt to wrap around the bottom to really complete the look.
5. DON’T LEAVE THE KIDS OUT
If your kids love to decorate the Christmas tree, as most do, having a smaller one that is just for them lets them show off their creativity and provides a sense of pride and ownership. They will be so excited to see it come back out every year to put their own stamp on it.
And if all of these steps still just seems like too much work, get in touch and myself and the Upstaging Limited team can come in and help you get the look you want just in time for the holidays.
