My Top 5 Design Trends for 2020

Hey friends!

Welcome to a new year and a new decade! There’s something so refreshing about the New Year and it always has me reflecting, but also looking ahead at my goals and what’s to come. And all this looking ahead has me thinking about the new design trends for 2020 and how I can’t wait to incorporate them!

While I predict that this year’s design trends will consist of some key elements, I still say that anything goes. After all, your home is about what makes you happy, not about what you read or see in magazines so don’t be afraid to think outside the box and do whatever you feel is right.

But if you’re looking for a little inspo, here are the top 5 interior design trends I’m crushing on for the coming year:

1.Dark Cabinets

My love affair with dark cabinets continues. You can’t go wrong with adding a touch of colour in your cabinetry.

Kitchens are where the heart is, or is that the food? Probably both :) Either way, we spend a lot of time in our kitchens and most get-togethers end with people congregating there, so adding some colour to the cabinetry can make your kitchen even more warm and inviting. Don’t be afraid to use two tones; dark cabinets on the lowers and lighter cabinets on the uppers. Or you can just use the island as a pop of colour if that makes you feel more comfortable.

If you prefer an all-white kitchen then perhaps add a bold pop of colour in your powder room. This is where all of your guests will use the bathroom anyway so why not make it colourful for them?

2. Pink. Lots and lots of pink.

My pink obsession won’t stop. I absolutely love the soft hues of pink. Not the bubble-gum colour you may be thinking of but the warm pink with subtle brown undertones. Pink is here is stay for this year and it has made a huge comeback in all areas, including paint colours and even in sofas and accent chairs.

Looking for a little extra drama? Why not paint the ceiling pink to really take your space to the next level!

Adding a feminine touch of pink, well, in my opinion, you can never go wrong. Ladies, you may have to convince someone who lives with you about the benefit and beauty of pink… or you can do what I do and paint first and beg for forgiveness second. Wink, wink ;)

3. Wall Murals

If you are looking for a “wow factor” then this is your go-to. Pick a room in your home that you want to add some extra flare to and just do it!

My first time using wall murals was early last year when I purchased the peel and stick of large flowers for a nursery design job I was working on and I absolutely fell in love. They can be used in any room; I actually just put up a huge wall mural in an office space.

Afraid of the commitment? No worries! The peel and stick version can be removed if you choose to, but I have a feeling you won’t need to once you see it done.

4. Built-in Hutches

Let’s face it, we all have too much kitchenware to store. Whether you are a collector of antiques or you have inherited dishes from family that you never use but just can’t bear to part with, we could all use more storage and that’s where the new custom built-in hutches come in.

They are not only on-trend but super handy for storage too. You can display your dishes in the glass cabinets and use the large drawers to hide things only used, well, once a year for holidays :)

5. Gold Everything

Remember when your grandma was removing her gold faucets because they were dated? Well, guess what? Gold is back and I don’t think it’s going away. Gold mirrors, lamps and faucets are still high on the trend list and I just love it.

Can’t decide if it’s for you or not? That’s ok, you can mix metals! The rule that said that was a no-no went out the window long ago. Mixing and matching is a good way to use various metals and adds a really nice contrast.

So what do you think? Are you loving these trends too? Questioning any of them? I’d love to hear from you.

Happy designing!
